Movie screenings at USF Lakeland highlight diversity
LAKELAND,
FL (June 16, 2008) -
The University of South Florida Lakeland will show two films that highlight an issue receiving increased national attention. Both movies are free and open to the public:
- "Accessory to Murder: Our Culture's Complicity in the Death of Ryan Skipper" : June 18, 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m., LTB 1125. Ryan Skipper, from Polk County, was brutally murdered because he was gay. This not-for-profit documentary details his life and death but also deals with what it describes as the societal forces that encourage homophobia and violence against gays and lesbians. This documentary was independently produced following an outcry from Skipper's family and friends who wanted the truth of his life and death to be told.
- "In Sickness and In Health": June 24, 1:00 p.m.- 2:00 p.m., LTB 1125. This documentary tells the emotionally grueling story of Marilyn Maneely and partner Diane Marini as they, and six other couples, battle the New Jersey legal system for the right to marry. However, the crux of this film turns out to be not simply an embittered legal battle for civil rights, but rather the devastation caused by Marilyn's unexpected diagnosis with ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease. The film offers a heartbreaking but ultimately inspiring glimpse into a historic moment for civil rights and lets the viewer decide whether that glimpse will transcend the screen into anything of greater importance.
According to Dr. Jan Lloyd, director of student life, "The purpose of these events is to increase awareness and understanding for the campus and Polk County and to develop an inclusive environment for the campus where everyone feels welcome. Regardless of color of skin, religious beliefs, or sexual orientation, USF Lakeland is a campus community which appreciates and supports all diversity."
