Lakeland National Merit Scholar receives USF scholarship
LAKELAND,
FL (June 3, 2008) - Barbara Dinkins of Lakeland has received a University of South Florida Tradition of Excellence Scholarship for National Merit Scholars. The valedictorian of PCC Collegiate High School's Class of 2008, Dinkins will attend USF's Honors College, where she plans to major in psychology.
At a Collegiate High School awards ceremony last night, before a standing-room-only crowd, David Steele, a former National Merit Scholar and University Advancement director at USF Lakeland, recognized Dinkins for her accomplishments. According to Steele, "On behalf of the University of South Florida, I can say we are very impressed with Miss Dinkins' achievements and honored that she has chosen to pursue excellence at the next level here at USF. She is a credit to her family, to her community, to the Collegiate High School -- and now she will be a credit to her University."
The USF Tradition of Excellence Scholarship for National Merit Scholars provides $48,000 ($12,000 a year for four years). Recipients also receive a laptop computer, priority course registration, first priority when choosing on-campus housing, and a Passport Scholarship in their junior or senior year to support a study abroad.
The Honors College at USF is for motivated students, regardless of major. The program emphasizes the development of thinking, reasoning, analytic and writing skills. The curriculum replaces a significant portion of the University's general education requirements.
PCC Collegiate High School provides academic and technical education for serious high school students who desire to undertake college-level study. The two-year curriculum enables students to complete a high school diploma and many of the requirements for an associate degree, simultaneously, in either academic transfer or technical education options.
The National Merit® Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. High school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test - which serves as an initial screen of approximately 1.4 million entrants each year-and by meeting published program entry/participation requirements.
