Groundbreaking puts Polk County on the road to opportunity

LAKELAND, FL (February 18, 2008) -
Progress toward a new campus for the University of South Florida Lakeland took a giant step forward today when the Polk Board of County Commissioners held a groundbreaking ceremony for the widening and extension of Pace Road. When the project is completed, Pace Road will be a gateway to the planned new USF Lakeland campus at the intersection of I-4 and the Polk Parkway.

Speaking at the event Dr. Marshall Goodman, VP and CEO of USF Lakeland, said, “Some people see Pace Road. I see Innovation Way. This project will open up our entire region for economic development and serve as a gateway to opportunity.”

Also speaking at the ceremony were Commission Chairman Sam Johnson, Commissioner Jack Myers, County Manager Mike Herr, Tom Patton, director of the Central Florida Development Council Director Tom Patton, and Auburndale City Manager Robert Green. The platform also included Commissioners Bob English and Jean Reed, and the crowd of more than 60 onlookers included USF Lakeland’s Executive Council.

Pace Road will be widened and extended west from its current ending at Pearce Rd. in Auburndale to a new Polk Parkway interchange that will assist students traveling to and from the future campus. It will also provide access to the Polk Commerce Center and other future development in the northern part of Auburndale.

The $14.2 million project, which is funded entirely by impact fees, is scheduled to be completed Jan. 17, 2009. Funded by Transportation Engineering Impact Fee #111, District A, the project satisfies objectives of the County Comprehensive Plan and the Polk County Transportation Organization’s 2030 Transportation Improvement Plan.
