Polk County Bulls fans invited to National Signing Day Mixer
LAKELAND,
FL (February 4, 2008) - Lead by Lakeland's own Matt Grothe, the University of South Florida Bulls have high hopes for the 2008 college football season. Fans in Polk County are invited to meet coach Jim Leavitt and discuss the upcoming season at the 2008 National Signing Day Mixer Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2008, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Splitsville, 615 Channelside Dr., Tampa.
The 2008 season holds fantastic promise, with great returning players and outstanding recruits. In addition to Grothe, USF's roster includes two other Polk County talents: junior Benjamin Williams of Lake Wales and sophomore Jamar Taylor of Lakeland.
The Feb. 6 mixer is sponsored by the USF Alumni Association's Tampa Chapter and USF Bulls Club. National Signing Day is the first day a high school senior can sign a binding National Letter of Intent for college football.
Coach Leavitt and his staff will be on hand to update fans on the successful recruiting season and to answer questions about their upcoming season in the Big East. Come out and talk with fellow USF alumni, students, and other Bulls fans!
"I'm very excited about our prospects for signing day," said USF alum Randy Dotson, manager of substation operation for Lakeland Electric. "We are bringing in more talent and addressing some more of our needs areas. It looks like again the Bulls will have a good chance of signing some local Lakeland athletes. This makes the USF Lakeland connection even stronger. With what I have seen as potential signees, and the performance from last season, we should definitely be a force and a favorite for the Big East title next season.
Dotson, a USF engineering graduate, is an active supporter of USF athletics and of USF Lakeland. He is a popular participant in Lakeland commencement ceremonies as a representative of the Alumni Association.
The Bulls enter 2008 after a historic season that included national TV coverage, USF's first ever sell-out, and exciting wins over Auburn and West Virginia. The Bulls also cracked the top 25 for the first time, rising as high as No. 2 in the nation.
In Polk County, fans caught Bulls fever like never before. For the first time, USF Lakeland students lined up to purchase football tickets, while a prominent billboard featured an action photo of QB Matt Grothe, who starred at Lake Gibson High School. More than 250 fans from Polk County attended USF Lakeland Community Day Sept. 22 at Raymond James Stadium, watching the Bulls trounce the North Carolina Tar Heels. Students, faculty and staff at USF Lakeland have taken special pride in the growing connection between the campus and USF's athletics programs
